Overview

Cargo Racks are structures that snap to the deck of a ship and provide an inventory that reduces the weight of contained items by 80%. Each container can hold 1600 weight but due to the weight reduction, this equates to 800 weight worth of goods.

Usage

Each Cargo Rack fitted will slow down a ship, even if the containers are empty. A ship fitted with the maximum number of Cargo Racks will suffer a 40% speed penalty. Cargo Racks snap to the same points as Diving Attachment and Dinghy Ship Hangars, therefore the speed reduction per container varies depending on the class of ship.

  • Schooner: Maximum 2 Cargo Racks - 20% per rack
  • Brigantine: Maximum 4 Cargo Racks - 10% per rack
  • Galleon: Maximum 6 Cargo Racks - 6 2/3% per rack

Using the radial menu, Cargo Racks may drop their container. When the container is dropped a flotsam cargo container is dropped into the water removing the ship's speed penalty and leaving the frame of the rack on the ship. The container can be picked up again by any ship with a Cargo rack using the radial menu of an empty ship cargo rack. When the container is in the water, a player can inspect but not add or remove items from a floating cargo container. Dumping cargo in this manner is potentially expensive but may prevent the loss of the entire ship.

Cargo Racks that have dumped their cargo may be restored to normal operation via the radial menu. A new Cargo Rack item is required. Restoring a cargo container in this way does not replace the cargo rack frame (useful when the original Cargo Rack was high quality or painted).

NEEDS TO BE TESTED:

What happens when >1600 weight? Does it snap off/start sinking your ship/simply not allow past that cap?

Tested Jan 7th 2020: Confirmed, does not allow more than 1600 pounds to be added. Therefore it will not snap off. You will reach that 1600 pounds surprisingly fast with heavy resources. You will use a little more than half the max item slots depending on the resource and be at max weight of the cargo box. It is still the most effective way to carry large amounts of heavy resources for long distances. ~SamJack

Does the flotsam cargo container have a spoil timer like the SotD flotsam eventually disappearing or does it last for ever/until server restart?

Found 2 on the shore of an island randomly (Oct 2019). Did not have a spoil timer on them. I'm assuming they might disappear when the server restarts. That theory remains to be tested.

I did find that if you drop an empty container to pick up one with items your empty container disappears, it is not dropped as empty flotsam. ~SamJack (all above tested info still accurate on Jan 7th 2020)

Can confirm after sitting with lost cargo rack in ocean while crewmate return with salvage ship, cargo crate slowly loses health, about 1% every 10-15 minutes. ~WretchedWyrm
