Utility[ | ]
Horses are useful mainly for their high speed and stamina, allowing a rider to cover large distances quickly. In addition, they can be equipped with a cargo harness to haul cannons. Their superior speed and stamina make them an arguably superior alternative to bears for swivel gun-based PvP. They also have a high torpor kick that can be executed with the right click.
Speed[ | ]
In-game speed testing shows a Horse can sprint 500 meters in 34 seconds.
- That is 53 KPH which is 33 MPH.
- That is equal to a ship moving at 29 knots*.
It can cover the same distance in 28 seconds by performing a nonstop series of sprinting jumps.
- That is 64 KPH which is 40 MPH.
- That is equal to a ship moving at 35 knots*.
Note: Wearing a Tier 2 Cargo Harness or a Tier 2 Carriage Saddle will prevent your mount from jumping.
Of course, your actual sustained travel speed will be determined by your mount's stamina and the obstacles in your path. Fortunately, a Horse is very good at navigating obstacles. Its stamina drains very slowly and it recovers its stamina quickly.
* To see your ship's current speed in knots as a comparison, obtain a Sextant buff.
Taming[ | ]
Level: | Taming Food: | % | Rate: |
---|---|---|---|
Sugar Cane | 16s | ||
29 | Lime | 1.45% | 16s |
Preferred food: Sugar Cane, Requires you to damage to 20% then Bola.
Horses will also eat Vegetables, Fruits and Berries, although they are less effective incrementally in that order.
Tips for taming: tame a monkey and use the monkey to fling poop at it to slow it down until it is weak then throw a Bola and feed it.
Tip #2 - Horses have a slower swim speed, and if scared into the water, are easier to damage, however a user can't throw a bola from the water.
Breeding[ | ]
You can Breed Horses in the following biomes: Eastern Tropics, Western Temperate, Eastern Temperate, Eastern Tundra, Western Tundra, Equatorial, High Desert, Low Desert.
Horses cannot be bred in Western Tropics (verified 2019-07-13 v209.499)
Acceptable temperatures for Horse mating and offspring are between 19c and 32c. Or 66.2f and 89.6f
Notes On Timing[ | ]
Successfully raising a high-imprint offspring—or even just keeping your new buddy alive at all—can take quite a bit of time and good scheduling. So here is a rundown of the relevant times to be mindful of:
- Mating time: xx minutes
- Baby born after: 4 hours
- Length of baby phase: 4 hours and 30 minutes
- Cuddle interval: 8 hours
- Total time from birth to adulthood: x days, x hours and x minutes
Combat[ | ]
While the LMB ability does a small amount of damage, the RMB ability does more damage and has a significant torpor effect on hit.
